The lifeScan System is an integrated hardware and software platform for high resolution AFM of biological molecules and other macromolecules, that is compatible with available atomic force microscopes. |
Departing from current methods, the cantilever tip touches the molecule only once each pixel under true digital control.
Innovative design creates high resolution
The tip moves in a normal incident, non-oscillatory path in angstrom steps at microsecond intervals.
Surface detection is pre-set at a selectable low compressive force.
Calibrated magnetic pull-off releases the tip without raking.
Importantly, specimen piezo correction is intra-pixel fast and digitally accurate, as is specimen height.
lifeScan System features
- Concurrent topography, digital differential height and adhesion force maps
- Force curves recorded for all pixels in every field
- Optimum utilization and preservation of sharpest tips
- Access to important signals on front panel
- Modular hardware and software design
- Advanced data analysis program suite

lifeScan Workstation
The Workstation houses the i) lifeProcessor program which executes on an installed DSP computer to direct the AFM proper and the ii) lifeView operator program to direct operation and data display.
lifeScan Controller
The main Controller box translates computer instructions from the two programs in the lifeScan Workstation into signals understood by the AFM, and conversely.
lifeAnalysis
Program suite in Interactive Display Language (IDL) carries out standard and advanced image data analysis concurrent with data collection.

lifeMag Cantilevers
Cantilevers fitted with samarium cobalt permanent magnetic particles work with the magnetic drive incorporated in lifeScan for controlled tip withdrawal.
